Northwest Africa 14321 (NWA 14321)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2021

Classification: HED achondrite (Eucrite, cumulate)

History: The meteorite was purchased from a dealer in Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Four light brownish fragments with some fusion crust.

Petrography: The achondrite shows a granular texture of predominantly up to 4 mm sized accumulated low-Ca-pyroxene and abundant plagioclase occurring interstitially and as rounded to subrounded inclusions in pyroxene. Low-Ca pyroxene contains abundant augite exsolutions lamellae and blebs. Minor phases include chromite, FeS, and metallic iron. The meteorite is highly shocked. It contains abundant shock veins and plagioclase is partly converted into maskelynite. Pyroxene shows brownish staining due to terrestrial alteration.

Geochemistry: low-Ca pyroxene host: Fs39.3±0.1Wo2.7±0.1 (Fs39.1-39.6Wo2.5-2.8, n=10, FeO/MnO=26-29); augite exsolution lamellae: Fs16.5±0.2Wo43.0±0.3 (Fs16.1-16.7Wo42.4-43.4, n=10, FeO/MnO=23-27); calcic plagioclase: An93.6±0.5 (An92.7-94.4, n=10); chromite:Cr#=79.9±0.2, Mg#10.7±0.3, TiO2=3.6±0.1 wt%, n=7

Classification: Eucrite-cm based on mineral chemistry and texture.
