Northwest Africa 14898 (NWA 14898)

(Northwest Africa)

Purchased: 2022

Classification: Ureilite

History: The meteorite was purchased from a meteorite dealer in Morocco.

Physical characteristics: Brownish fragment largely covered fusion crust.

Petrography: The meteorite is a breccia predominantly composed of up to 2 mm sized weakly zoned olivine (about 72 vol%) and finely recrystallized pyroxene (about 25 vol%) displaying pronounced patchy zoning. Cataclastic, partly shock melted zones frequently ocurr between the mineral grains. Contains up to 300 µm sized graphite grains. Accessories include FeS and some metallic iron.

Geochemistry: olivine: Fa17.6±1.7 (Fa14.5-19.1, Cr2O3: 0.69±0.06 wt%, CaO: 0.47±0.03 wt%, FeO/MnO=35±4, n=10; pyroxene: Fs15.6±1.6Wo7.2±2.6 (Fs13.1-17.5Wo3.7-11.2, Cr2O3: 0.94±0.09 wt%, Al2O3: 0.20±0.11 wt%, FeO/MnO=23±2, n=20); bulk composition (µXRF; all wt%): SiO2: 40.2, TiO2: 0.05, Al2O3: 0.32, MgO: 35.6, CaO: 1.25, Cr2O3: 0.78, MnO: 0.44, FeO: 19.3, NiO: 0.11, S: 0.27

Classification: Ureilite, partly molten. Classification based on mineral and bulk composition plus presence of graphite. Brecciated and partly shock-melted specimen.
