Northwest Africa 16811 (NWA 16811)
(Northwest Africa)
Purchased: 2024 Mar
Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CVox3)
History: Purchased in March 2024 by Habib Naji Naji.
Physical characteristics: Single stone with slightly weathered fusion crust.
Petrography: (D. Sheikh, Cascadia) Sample is comprised of chondrules (Av. ~1 mm, up to 3 mm), refractory inclusions (Av. ~1.5 mm, up to 4 mm), and isolated mineral fragments (generally sub-mm in size) set within a fine-grained Fe-rich matrix; chondrule/CAI/matrix modal abundances are 50/4/46 vol. % respectively. Accessory phases identified include magnetite (present generally as rounded blebs within chondrules), pentlandite, and spinel.
Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa24.1±15.0, range Fa0.5-45.8, n=25), Low-Ca Pyroxene (Fs1.3±0.6Wo1.0±0.5, range Fs0.8-3.0Wo0.7-2.3, n=11), Ni content of pentlandite (in wt. %): 7.3±0.1, n=2.
Classification: Carbonaceous Chondrite (CV3).
