Northwest Africa 17208 (NWA 17208)
(Northwest Africa)
Purchased: 2024 Oct
Classification: Primitive achondrite (Winonaite)
History: The meteorite was purchased from a Morrocan dealer on the mineral fair in Munich, Germany.
Physical characteristics: Two brownish rocks with some fusion crust.
Petrography: Primitive achondrite composed of silicate-rich portions separated by abundant metal veins and pockets. Silicate portions show equilibrated textures with abundant 120-degree grain boundaries and are dominated by Mg-rich olivine, low-Ca pyroxene, Ca-pyroxene, and albitic feldspar. Some low-Ca pyroxenes show reverse zoning with Fe-rich cores and Mg-rich rims. Taenite and kamacite constitute metal veins and pockets. Minor phases include troilite, daubréelite, alabandite, and schreibersite.
Geochemistry: olivine: Fa2.3±0.1 (Fa2.2-2.3, FeO/MnO=7±1, n=7); homogenous low-Ca pyroxene: Fs0.9±0.3Wo1.3±0.2 (Fs0.4-1.4Wo1.1-1.6, FeO/MnO=8±5, n=7); reversely zoned low-Ca pyroxene: Fs6.0±2.7Wo2.5±0.7 (Fs2.9-8.7Wo1.6-3.2, FeO/MnO=6±2, n=7); Ca-pyroxene: Fs2.0±1.2Wo45.5±2.3 (Fs0.9-4.2Wo42.2-47.6, FeO/MnO=8±1, n=7); feldspar (An8.3-12.1Ab85.1-88.4Or2.3-3.3, n=7); kamacite: Ni=6.3±0.5 wt%, Co=0.57±0.07 wt%, n=5; taenite: Ni=28.9±1.3 wt%, Co=0.21±0.04 wt%, n=5
