Timimoun 003 ( 3,619 g )
Timimoun 003 29°22.93' N, 1°11.73' E
Adrar, Algeria
Purchased: 2025 Apr
Classification: Enstatite achondrite (Aubrite)
Physical characteristics: The surface of the stone exhibits a brownish-yellow to whitish coating, which represent a weathered surface. The interior reveals whitish enstatite crystals interspersed with brownish tarnished spots. Rare, tiny grains of fresh metal are also visible.
Petrography: The analyzed sample exhibits a coarse-grained texture, dominated by an aggregate of enstatite grains with grain size to several mm, with accessory phases including Ti-bearing troilite, daubréelite, Si-bearing kamacite, diopside, and albite. Olivine was not observed in the examined section. Sulfide grains are usually altered and replaced by secondary terrestrial mineralization such as iron-oxide, Mn-Fe oxide, or complex mixture of silicate and oxides. Ca-carbonate thin veins are also found.
Geochemistry: Enstatite Fs0.2±0.1Wo0.8±0.3 , n=17; diopside Fs0.1±0.2Wo46.6±0.7, n=3; plagioclase An3.0-3.6Ab93.4-95.1, n=3; troilite contains Ti=1.0-1.4 wt.%, n=5; kamacite contains Ni=0.4-0.5 wt.% and Si=0.5-1.2 wt.%, n=5.
Classification: Aubrite.
Specimens: Mark Lyon holds the main mass. One end-cut sample (20.5 g) at MSN-FI, University of Firenze, Italy.
