The Vaca Muerta meteorite is a rare stony-iron meteorite, also known as a mesosiderite, discovered in 1861 in the Chilean Atacama Desert. The total mass of the fragments found is approximately 3.8 tons.
The Vaca Muerta meteorite belongs to the mesosiderite group, which consists of a mixture of iron-nickel metal and silicate minerals. It is one of the largest mesosiderites ever discovered. The fragments of the Vaca Muerta meteorite are spread over a large area in the Atacama Desert.
The name "Vaca Muerta" means "dead cow" in Spanish. The meteorites were named after a nearby dry riverbed.
